Motley Crue:
Billy Idol / Motley Crue Charity gig. Club Shelter, Pasadena, USA.
30.01.95
Description
The last gig of
John Corabi in the band, I have never
heard before about this show, but I found it in a torrent with a very
interesting note by the uploader, he claimed is
soundboard, it’s not but it’s awesome anyway.
Note: I
missed the Palladium show and saw them a few months after the tour ended, Jan
30 1995 at Club Shelter in Pasadena which was the last show with John Corabi. Kinda bummed they didn't
do at least one more album/tour so I could see that lineup at the House Of Blues.
This is an old post I recycle from time to time:
I was going to go see them at the Hollywood Palladium
in 1994 but had some bullshit to deal with that day and just didn't feel like
it.
Fast forward to Jan 1995 and I look in the LA Weekly
the Thursday it came out and almost missed the small ad - Club Shelter in
Pasadena, Motley Crue and friends, some sort of
benefit for a roadie who ran over his own kid. Doors at 7:00.
I was in no hurry to get there and figure if I am too
late I could hit some of the local record stores. Get there at 8:30. No line,
club is still dead empty. At one point I realize it's
Nikki Sixx on the balcony in front of me. He is
walking around the club and no one is swooping down on him.
A few unremarkable bands of various genres (I think I
remember a soul/gospel ish act playing) play. Then a surprise appearance by Billy Idol with Steve Stevens, Matt Sorum and an emaciated and unrecognizeable
Duff McKagan. They do Communication Breakdown,
Shakin' All Over, Paranoid and Rebel Yell.
I just have to laugh to myself and think if this gig
was 5 years ago it could have been held at the Rose Bowl.
Motley Crue finally takes
the stage. The club is no longer empty but I have plenty of elbow room. They
play Shout At The Devil and Hammered, unfortunately
the only MC '94 song of the night. Then they bring out special guest Dannyboy of House Of Pain to join
them for Livewire. He sings backups and at the end of the song stagedives. Which you can't really do on
a thirty something burnout crowd late on Monday night. He immedietly gets dropped and disappears from view before
ending up on stage and storming off again.
Then they do Home Sweet Home without the piano. The
dude from House Of Pain comes back out onstage toward
the end and heads right toward John Corabi. John is
holding him back with his hand on his chest and looking at him intently as he
hums out the last part of the song then surrenders the mic.
Dannyboy starts cursing out the crowd because when he
stagedived his wallet got stolen.
The last song of the short 30 min set is Primal
Scream. They wak offstage through the crowd and right
after Tommy leaps off (the last of the 4 to do so) he appears to get in some
sort of angry confrontation with someone in the crowd before his own security
intervenes and drags him off.
I know it's a long post but I still remember it
vividly, it's still my favorite Motley Crue show and
I love telling the story even if it's not the usual "they rocked the
packed arena and it was so awesome" kind of story.
